Rotab Mazafati from Bam is sold in Malaysia mainly by the carton, usually 12 packets of 600g, and it has to be kept in the fridge or freezer. Those two facts decide whether buying it online saves you anything. A walk-in Kedai Kurma lets you buy a single packet and carry it home cold. Ordering online makes sense when you plan for a whole carton, and that takes a little arithmetic and a look inside your freezer first.
What a carton costs per kilo
Twelve packets of 600g is 7.2kg. These are the carton prices Green Diamond listed for Rotab Mazafati in October 2026:
- Rotab Mazafati AAA, 12 x 600g: RM86, about RM11.90 a kilo
- Rotab BAM AAA, 12 x 600g: RM88, about RM12.20 a kilo
- Rotab Green Diamond, 12 x 600g: RM90, RM12.50 a kilo
Per packet, that is roughly RM7.20 to RM7.50. Those numbers only become useful when you set them against what you pay for single packets nearby, so note the shop price and the packet weight next time you see Rotab on a shelf. Seven kilos of a fridge date needs a plan
This is where Rotab differs from most dates sold here. Green Diamond’s storage note is plain: keep it in the fridge, or in the freezer if you want it to last longer. A carton that arrives on a day you have no space for it is money at risk. Before ordering, clear room for twelve packets, or agree to split the carton with family or neighbours. The 600g packets make splitting easy, since nobody has to open a bag and weigh out shares.
The packet size also helps at home. Take out one packet at a time and leave the rest frozen, rather than opening several and letting them sit.
Where the time saving comes from
The time you save is mostly in not making repeat trips. One delivered carton can cover weeks of eating if your freezer holds it. Online listings also show stock before you go anywhere. When we checked in October 2026, all three Green Diamond Rotab Mazafati cartons above were marked out of stock. Finding that out on a phone takes a minute. Finding it out at a counter takes an afternoon.
When your usual Rotab is unavailable, the listing shows what else is. Green Diamond’s Rotab Sukkary, a fresh Saudi Sukkari that also needs the fridge, was in stock as a 3kg pack at RM63, or RM21 a kilo. It is a different date at a different price per kilo, so compare it on that basis rather than as a straight swap. Our guide to fresh rutab-stage dates explains how fresh dates like these differ from dried ones.
Questions to ask before you pay
A fresh date bought online is only a saving if it arrives in good condition. Ask the seller three things: how the carton is packed for delivery, how many days it usually takes to reach your area, and what happens if it arrives warm. A clear answer is worth more than a slightly lower price. Our post on minimum order quantities with date suppliers is useful if you are buying several cartons at once.
Check that the listing names the variety and the origin, because “rotab” on its own can mean more than one date. Then add the delivery charge to the basket and work out the price per kilo again. People seeking high-quality dates in Malaysia for a stall or for Ramadan orders will want the wholesale view too. Shops that offer a diverse range of date varieties let you add a dried date to the same order, which spreads one delivery charge over more of what you need.
The short version
For Rotab, buying online saves money when you take a full carton at around RM12 a kilo and have the freezer space for it. It saves time when you check stock before you set out. Without the freezer space, buying single packets locally is the safer choice.
