A price guide is only useful if it has real figures in it, so this one does. Every price below comes from one Malaysian date wholesaler’s live price list, checked on 27 October 2026. This site does not set those prices. They are a snapshot of what the trade was charging in October 2026, and they will move with stock and promotions.
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, so every date sold here is imported. Rather than skim every variety, this guide follows one of them through the whole list: Safawi. The reason is simple. Of all the varieties on the list, Safawi had the most listings in stock on the day of the check: seven out of nine.
What Safawi is
Safawi comes from the Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. It is longer than Ajwa, dark brown to black, soft and chewy. Grades such as A, AA, AAA and Jumbo are each importer’s own size sorting, not an international standard, so the grade names below describe this one wholesaler’s list and nothing more.
All nine Safawi listings, October 2026
| Listing | Pack | Price (RM) | RM per kg | Stock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safawi Premium A No.2 (Mini) | 5kg | 80 | 16.00 | In stock |
| Safawi Premium A No.1 (Small) | 5kg | 95 | 19.00 | In stock |
| Safawi Premium AA | 5kg | 153 | 30.60 | In stock |
| Safawi Premium AAA | 5kg | 163 | 32.60 | In stock |
| Safawi Premium Jumbo | 5kg | 195 | 39.00 | In stock |
| Safawi A | 1kg | 35 | 35.00 | In stock |
| Safawi AA | 1kg | 40 | 40.00 | Out of stock |
| Safawi AAA Jumbo | 1kg | 45 | 45.00 | In stock |
| Safawi AA Pouch Bag | 24 × 200g (4.8kg) | 185 | 38.54 | Out of stock |
Two listings were out of stock: the 1kg AA and the AA Pouch Bag. Every 5kg pack was in stock.
The steps between 5kg grades
The five 5kg packs climb from RM80 to RM195. The steps are not even. Going from A No.2 (Mini) to A No.1 (Small) adds RM15 a pack, or RM3 a kilo. The jump from A No.1 to AA is the big one: RM58 a pack, which is RM11.60 a kilo. AA to AAA adds only RM10 a pack. AAA to Jumbo adds RM32.
Put another way, the two A packs sit together at the bottom, AA and AAA sit together in the middle, and Jumbo stands alone at the top. A buyer choosing between AA and AAA is choosing over RM2 a kilo. A buyer choosing between A No.1 and AA is choosing over RM11.60 a kilo.
Sale price against regular price
Every Safawi listing showed a sale price below a higher regular price, and the figures above are the sale prices. The markdown changes the order at the top. At regular prices the AAA 5kg (RM260) was listed above the Jumbo 5kg (RM230). At sale prices the order flips: Jumbo is RM195 and AAA is RM163. So a ranking built from regular prices would point to the wrong pack as the dearest.
In percentage terms the A No.2 (Mini) had the deepest cut of the five 5kg packs, from RM140 down to RM80, about 43% off. The Jumbo had the smallest, from RM230 down to RM195, about 15% off.
1kg packs against 5kg packs
Both in-stock 1kg packs cost more per kilo than the 5kg packs they are paired with here. The 1kg Safawi A at RM35 is RM16 a kilo above the 5kg A No.1 (Small) at RM19 a kilo. The 1kg AAA Jumbo at RM45 is RM6 a kilo above the 5kg Jumbo at RM39 a kilo. If you only need a kilo, the 1kg pack still keeps the outlay to RM35 or RM45 instead of RM95 or RM195.
How Safawi compares with Ajwa on this list
Ajwa comes from Madinah too. It is small, roundish, near-black and soft. Its cheapest in-stock 5kg pack was Ajwa Premium A No.1 (Small) at RM115, or RM23 a kilo. The cheapest in-stock Safawi 5kg pack was RM7 a kilo lower, at RM16.
Before you order
Stock changes week to week, and sale prices can end. Ask for a current quote that names the variety, the grade and the pack weight, then compare quotes per kilo rather than per pack. For more about this site, see the about page. The contact page has a form for questions.
