Medjool and Safawi are both soft dates, and the price list used here carries both. Their prices do not sit side by side, though. This guide sets the two against each other using one Malaysian date wholesaler’s price list, checked in October 2026, which carries nine Medjool listings and nine Safawi listings. If you are after Harga Kurma Medjool in Malaysia, the Medjool figures are here in full, with Safawi as the yardstick.
Where each date comes from
Medjool originated in Morocco, and every Medjool listing on this list is labelled Palestine. It is a large, very soft date with a rich caramel taste. Safawi comes from the Madinah region of Saudi Arabia. It is longer than Ajwa, dark brown to black, soft and chewy.
The grade names differ too. Medjool on this list uses Large, Jumbo, Premium Jumbo and Super Jumbo, and Safawi uses A, AA, AAA, Jumbo and AAA Jumbo, with “No.1 (Small)” and “No.2 (Mini)” added to two of the A listings. All five 5kg Safawi names also carry the word “Premium”, which the table below leaves out. These grades are each importer’s own size sorting, not an international standard, and the list does not say how a Safawi Jumbo compares with a Medjool Jumbo.

Seven of the nine Safawi listings were in stock, against five of the nine Medjool listings.
Per kilo, the two ranges never meet
In-stock Safawi ran from RM16 to RM45 a kilo. In-stock Medjool ran from RM56 to RM77.78 a kilo. The cheapest in-stock Medjool, the Premium Jumbo 5kg pack, still cost RM11 a kilo more than the dearest in-stock Safawi, the 1kg AAA Jumbo pack. On this October list there was no point where an in-stock Medjool and an in-stock Safawi cost the same per kilo.
At 5kg
Both dates came in 5kg packs, which makes this the cleanest comparison. The two in-stock 5kg Medjool packs were RM280 and RM315. The five in-stock 5kg Safawi packs ran from RM80 to RM195. The RM280 Medjool pack cost RM85 more than the dearest 5kg Safawi, and RM200 more than the cheapest. For the RM280 of one 5kg Medjool pack, the list had 15kg of Safawi A No.2 (Mini) at RM240, three 5kg packs, with RM40 left over.

For a smaller amount
Under 5kg, the in-stock Medjool option was the 900g box at RM70. The in-stock 1kg Safawi packs were RM35 for A and RM45 for AAA Jumbo. RM70 buys two 1kg Safawi A packs, 2kg in total, against 900g of Medjool. Against the AAA Jumbo pack, the Medjool box cost RM25 more for 100g less fruit.
Before you compare your own quotes
Put both dates on a per-kilo basis and leave out anything out of stock. On this list that meant setting aside all three Large Medjool listings, one Jumbo Medjool listing, the 1kg Safawi AA pack and the Safawi AA Pouch Bag. Demand for dates in Malaysia peaks before and during Ramadan, with other peaks around Hari Raya, weddings, kenduri and umrah gifts, so check again close to the day you buy.
