A carton of dates can carry two kinds of information. One is an organic claim on the front. The other is a nutrition panel on the back. This page looks at organic dates wholesale in Malaysia by asking what each of the two can tell a buyer about health, and where each one stops.
Where the fruit comes from
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, and every date sold here is imported. Any farm that earned organic status for a lot is abroad, so a buyer in Malaysia only meets it through the label and the papers that travel with the stock.
This site takes its name from Rotab Mazafati Bam. Mazafati comes from Bam, in the Kerman province of Iran. It is a dark, very soft date with high moisture, and it needs refrigeration. Rotab is the soft, fresh-ripe stage of a date. Tamr is the fully ripe, drier stage.
What the front of the carton promises
The US National Organic Program is a useful worked example, because its labelling page sets the rules out plainly. Organic product labels must be reviewed and approved by a USDA-accredited certifying agent before they are used in the marketplace.
The rules then sort products into tiers. Most raw, unprocessed or minimally processed farm crops can be labeled “100 percent organic”. The plain word “organic” needs at least 95 percent organic ingredients, not counting salt and water. “Made with organic” needs at least 70 percent. A seller who is not certified must not make any organic claim on the principal display panel or use the USDA organic seal anywhere on the package.
Those rules cover how the food is produced and handled, and how the claim is checked. Nothing on that page sets a figure for sugar, fibre or any other nutrient.
What the back of the carton rests on
The USDA’s FoodData Central database has two entries for plain dates in its SR Legacy data set, Medjool and Deglet Noor. They are worth reading before anyone quotes you a nutrition panel.
Per 100 grams, the Medjool entry lists 277 kcal, 21.3 g of water, 66.5 g of total sugars and 6.7 g of dietary fibre. The Deglet Noor entry lists 282 kcal, 20.5 g of water, 63.4 g of total sugars and 8.0 g of fibre. The two split their sugars differently. Almost all of Medjool’s is glucose and fructose, while Deglet Noor carries 23.8 g of sucrose.
There is no Mazafati entry in that data set. A very soft, high-moisture date should not be handed the Medjool or Deglet Noor figures as if they were its own. If a supplier sends a nutrition panel for Mazafati, ask where the numbers came from.
What research says about organic food
A 2012 systematic review in the Annals of Internal Medicine, led by Smith-Spangler at Stanford, asked whether organic foods are safer or healthier than conventional alternatives. It included 17 studies in humans and 223 studies of nutrient and contaminant levels in foods.
Its conclusion has two parts. The published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods. Consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The antibiotic finding came from chicken and pork, not produce. The authors add that the studies were heterogeneous and limited in number, and that publication bias may be present. The abstract covers foods in general and does not mention dates.
Portion advice that applies to any date
The NHS counts a 30g portion of dried fruit, such as dates, as 1 of your 5 A Day. It also says dried fruit should be eaten at mealtimes, not as a snack between meals, to reduce the impact on teeth. FoodData Central gives a pitted Medjool date a weight of 24 grams, so 30g is a little more than one Medjool.
This page is general information and not medical advice.
Checks before an organic order
Ask which certificate covers the lot on offer and whose name is on it. Check that the label tier fits the pack, loose fruit or a mix with other ingredients. If a nutrition panel comes with the stock, ask which source it uses. For Mazafati, also ask how the cartons were kept cold on the way, since the variety needs refrigeration whether it is organic or not.
Demand for dates peaks before and during Ramadan. Hari Raya, weddings, kenduri and umrah gifts are other busy times, so ask for documents well ahead.
