“Non-comedogenic,” “oil-free,” and “hypoallergenic” appear on skincare packaging constantly, and none of them mean what shoppers assume. None are regulated terms with a fixed legal definition, in most markets — a brand can print them based on its own internal testing standard, or none at all.
Non-comedogenic is the closest to having a real basis: it usually means the formula was tested on a panel of people prone to clogged pores and didn’t cause breakouts in that specific test. It does not mean the product is guaranteed not to clog pores on every skin type — testing panels are small, and individual skin reacts differently to individual ingredients regardless of the overall formula’s rating.
Oil-free is more literal but narrower than it sounds. A product can be free of recognizable oils (coconut oil, mineral oil) and still contain heavy silicones or waxes that sit on skin similarly to oil would. Reading “oil-free” as “won’t feel heavy” isn’t a safe assumption.
Hypoallergenic is the loosest of the three. It generally means the formula avoids a list of common known irritants, not that it’s incapable of causing a reaction — allergies are individual, and a product can be hypoallergenic by the brand’s standard while still reacting badly with a specific person’s skin.
The practical response to all three labels is the same: patch test before applying anything new to your face. A small amount on the inner forearm or behind the ear, left for 24 to 48 hours, catches most reactions before they happen somewhere visible. this contact form is a reasonable place to ask before buying if a product’s ingredient list looks unfamiliar — a name you can’t parse on a label is worth a question, not a guess.
Reading the actual ingredient list, in order of concentration (ingredients are listed highest-to-lowest by volume), tells you more than any of the three marketing terms combined. If an ingredient you know irritates you sits near the top of the list, the front-of-box label doesn’t override that.
